Fitzwater Station, a notable stop on the anti-slavery underground railway that thrived before and during the Civil War, lends its name to the historic building which served as a way-stop during that turbulent era. Named for Abel Fitzwater, a prominent landowner and churchman from Upper Providence Township, Fitzwater Station was part of the expansive Fitzwater farm, which claimed much of the land in this section along the Schuylkill River. Abel Fitzwater is most remembered for his courageous actions following one of the devastating floods of the Schuylkill River in January 1839, when many bridges and structures were swept away by the raging waters. The newly established village of Lumberville, located on the Fitzwater farm, was inundated by floodwaters and massive floating ice chunks. Abel Fitzwater braved the icy waters repeatedly to rescue trapped residents, providing food, drinking water, and heat to those cut off by the flood. His heroic efforts during that flood came at a cost, as he developed a lingering illness that would claim his life a little over a year later. Eventually, Lumberville was renamed Port Providence, and the Schuylkill River was complemented by the Schuylkill Canal. The village flourished as coal-hauling barges traveled from central Pennsylvania to the bustling commercial hubs of Philadelphia. The Tavern on the canal became a popular spot, with the hardworking, hard-drinking bargemen making it a favored stop on their long journeys to and from Philadelphia. Abel Fitzwater was a fifth-generation descendant of Thomas Fitzwater, who arrived in America on the ship 'Welcome' with William Penn from Middlesex, England. Following his mother’s passing during his infancy, Abel Fitzwater was raised by his uncle, Moses Hobson, a well-known resident of Upper Providence Township. In 1825, after marrying Isabella Umstead, Fitzwater purchased his sprawling farm. His father-in-law, Jonas Umstead, owned a nearby farm in the village of Green Tree, located just a short distance from where you now sit. Following his father’s death, Abel Fitzwater's son, Joseph, continued to run the family farm and also established a hardware business in Phoenixville that specialized in equipment for steam-powered well drilling. Joseph became a significant figure in the Phoenixville business and social circles, serving as a director of the National Bank of Phoenixville and president of the renowned Phoenix Bridge Co., which constructed famous bridges worldwide.
